The Internet Society Somalia Chapter team (ISOC) is aware of the incident that has caused half of the country to lose internet connection since June 24, 2017. This is not the first time, and we hoped lessons had been learnt from the previous problems. However quick restoration is underway and hope Internet access will be available soon according to the Somali Minister of Telecommunication. The ISOC Somalia Chapter accepts the explanation the Minister of Telecommunication provided, and as he indicated we all hope that the internet services will be restored on July the 16th 2017 as mentioned by the Minister on the BBC Somali Service on the 14th of July 2017.
The education sector as we all as many Somali businesses suffered serious financial losses, estimated $10m a day, resulting from this incident. We like to point out the obvious: that backup, redundancy and business continuity are the foundations of the ICT world. Ignoring this elementary and yet profound step shows lack of understanding of the ICT industry. From legal perspective it borders negligence and reckless behaviour! We like to recommend the government to look into opening up this market for competition and allowing isviagraotc.com glocal (both global and local) investors to provide internet access solutions to our country.
